2020's breakout band in the Norwegian experimental music scene is touring Europe starting March 2022! Yawn is a volcano erupting under the frozen Nordic jazz-scene of today. Combining their passion for creativity with an aversion to convention, Yawn puts their heart into the desire for a new revolutionized way of playing music involving improvisation, heavy riffing and beautiful soundscapes.
Yawn is a five piece band with members from Norway, Sweden, and Canada. Heavily influenced by metal bands like Meshuggah, Car Bomb, and Gojira and simultaneously informed by American and European jazz traditions, Yawn is blazing a trail with their unique style of music, drawing their aesthetic from modern progressive metal by using loud 8-string guitars, dynamic drumming, and acrobatic rhythms. Their compositions extend the innovations of jazz music by employing open forms, free improvisation, and thematic development.
Live-processing of the band’s instruments via the software Supercollider also plays a huge role in creating Yawn’s unique sound.
In spring 2020, the world got a brief glimpse of Yawn before COVID-19 restrictions forced them to cancel their touring activities. At the time, word of Yawn had reached so many people that their live-streamed set from Oslo was seen more than 15 000 times within the first few days.
On September 11th, 2020 Yawn released “Cement,” the first single off their debut album "Squarewaves" releasing on Mindsweeper Records in December 1st. 2021. On a journey through a universe of machine-like guitar-riffs and luscious improvised soundscapes, Yawn's first artistic statement clearly states their agenda: Setting fire to the worlds perception of improvised music.
